Tyrone Garland finished his high school career at Bartram High as the third all-time leading scoring in Philadelphia Public School history – and there have been some big scorers including one named Wilt Chamberlain. So it was no surprise that with a visit to the Sweet 16 on the line tonight, Coach John Giannini saw his speedy guard wind up with the ball and hop down the lane with floater hooked over his right shoulder for the game winning bucket with 2.5 seconds left on the clock in the LaSalle Explorers heart-throbbing 76-74 victory in a game that was every bit as tight as the final score indicates.
It is fitting that Ramon Galloway, another transfer to LaSalle, kept the Explorers in the game with deadly three point shooting. Galloway returned home to Philly to be a stabilizing influence in a family that was crumbling, and it’ll be well worth your time reading about this special young man here.
I had a hunch when I wrote about it last week that the Explorers had the best shot among the three Philly Big Five teams to advance. Should be a very exciting game when LaSalle matches up against Witchita State on Thursday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Let the games continue!
