An Unpleasant Surprise

Once again manager Anthony Contreras filled out a lineup card that had Bryson Stott batting third followed by Logan O’Hoppe in the cleanup spot.

Exiting the ballpark yesterday I had a premonition that we should have saved some runs from the late inning blowout for today’s game, since we were facing the 8-3 first place Surprise Saguaros. Sure enough, it was a struggle on both sides of the ball today. Roansy Contreras got off to a rough start in the first inning, giving up the first of Yankees’ prospect Elijah Dunham’s two home runs. The Phillies’ Damon Jones came in to pitch a 1-2-3 second inning, but this game had a decidedly different feel than yesterday when James McArthur was dominant before and after yielding a two-run homer. By the way, Big Mac’s reward for his performance yesterday was serving as bat and ball boy today (due to COVID no outsiders are allowed in the dugout).

We weren’t the only Phillies fans in the house today, and one of them was sporting a T-shirt declaring Peoria to be “A Drinking Town With A Baseball Problem”. After our 5-1 loss to Surprise, dropping the Javelinas to 4-8, that may prove to be the case.

Logan O’Hoppe continued to impress, handling himself well behind the plate. Offensively Logan made good contact several times, including legging it out to first base on a ball that the center fielder mishandled, but was able to execute a force play on at third base.

In the bottom of the 8th, O’Hoppe narrowly missed putting the ball out of the park, smoking it off the fence to the right of the 410′ mark in center field and cruising into second base with a long double.

Looking at a freeze frame shot, you can see that the ball glances off the fence just below the yellow home run line above the “LA” in BALLAST. Yes, Logan – that was quite a “ball-ast”!
