Good to see that the much-anticipated makeover the Phillie Phanatic received, unveiled at today’spring training opener. was purely cosmetic (blue bangs and aqua tail), and didn’t change the fundamental nature of our fun-loving mascot.
It was a gorgeous day to come to the park for the first time in 2020, though tinged with a little bit of sadness. On the left center-field screen over the berm prior to the game, Phils paid tribute to an integral member of their family for many years, David Montgomery, who passed away last May.
With no fanfare a member of the spring staff was back at her usual position, waving on the parking pass patrons into the season ticket holder parking lot, having lost her husband Fred during the prior year. Life goes on for those who celebrate it.
A little pre-game ragtime … take me out to the ballgame!
And some other pre-game business, with Papa Joe (Girardi) carting around his daughters. I asked him if that was part of his job description and he said: “You bet!”
Inside the stadium it was a beautiful day to be outdoors, as the temp hovered around 76 degrees and the clouds served as backdrop rather than droplets of rain (as is scheduled for Tuesday).
The game itself was somewhat non-descript, with Aaron Nola scattering three hits in his time on the mound; Rhys Hoskins killing time in the dugout and inducing in some fandom on the backside of Hooters; and Bryce Harper nowhere to be found other than on the front cover of the program (signed by John Middleton – the same signature that appears on his paycheck!).
