The sportswriter Grantland Rice is credited with these famous lines:
“For when the One Great Scorer comes
To mark against your name,
He writes – not that you won or lost –
But how you played the Game.”
Which is all well and good when engaging in moral calculus for a life well lived, but anyone who has competed in athletic events knows that winning always leaves you with a better feeling than losing. So it was today for the Scottsdale Scorpions who have actually won two in a row to nudge their AFL record to 5-11, and join the Glendale Desert Dogs in a tie for last place instead of being in the cellar unaccompanied. Nice to see the Phillies 2B prospect Scott Kingery smack a long ball over the fence in LF.
The Scorpions’ 6-3 win over the Surprise Saguaros left the Phillies contingent – pitching coach Steve Schrenk, and players Jeff Singer, Mitch Walding, and Kingery in a good mood, basking in the sunlight after the game.
