Time to take a closer look at the AFL for 2015 – can’t wait to get out there for some R&R! In a previous blog I noted that the Phillies are part of the Glendale Desert Dogs this year, and their position players are J.P. Crawford, Andrew Knapp and Dylan Cozens – SS, C, and OF respectively. I didn’t mention the pitchers, and there are four – Tom Windle, Jesen Therien, Edubray Ramos, and Yacksel Rios.
Rios has improved at each level thus far, in going from the Gulf Coast League to Williamsport to Lakewood to Clearwater. For a 12th round draftee in 2011, that kind of development is a pleasant surprise. Having just turned 22 in June, I like his potential and evidently so do the Phillies! Looks like they’re still trying to figure out if he’s better suited to starting or relief pitching. He is off to a nice start in the AFL, having given up only one hit – a solo homer – in his two appearances through 5 innings. It is very common for AFL appearances to be just a couple of innings per outing, particularly early in the season.
The Dogs are off and running, and at 3-1 are leading the three team pack of the AFL West. The Salt River Rafters are also 3-1 atop the AFL East standings. Did I mention that I can’t wait to get out there and bask in some Arizona sun?
