Israel Edward Press, O.D., 1920 – 2015: Part 11 – Sitting Shiva

My father requested that we sit Shiva, derived from the Hebrew word for seven, in his apartment for one day.  Following that we finished the requisite days in my apartment with my sister, Arlene.  We commenced in the home of my niece and nephew in Queens on the evening marking the end of Sukkos, proceeded to Israel’s apartment with the religious accoutrements provided by Congregation Young Israel of Kew Garden Hills (thank you Aaron Chait and Rabbi Schoenfeld), and finished with the able assistance of the Congregation Shomrei Torah (thank you Sam Heller and Rabbi Yudin).  The extended communities were warm and welcoming, and the young men at Fair Lawn Commons were gracious in helping make the minyan which enabled us to honor my father’s spirit and facilitate his soul’s journey.  Having friends and family visit during this stressful period helped make the days go faster while providing time for reflection and introspection.  A special thank you to my wife, Miriam – who my father came to appreciate even more during this past year – and who helped coordinate everything with her usual skill, sensitivity, and attention to detail.
