I’m Not Freddy!

Last week, after a Phillies Spring Training loss at Bright House Field, a few players came out for some extra batgting practice under the watchful eyes of Manager Ryne Sandberg and roving instructor and ex-manager Charlie Manuel.  One of them was Andres Blanco, and as he stepped out of the cage, one young fan yelled to him “Hey Freddy, can I have your autograph”?  As he trotted back to the dugout, Blanco shot back at the young fan “I’m not Freddy!”

Well an autograph seeking kid might be excused for confusing the two utility infielders for one another, but professional broadcasters?  This afternoon’s game vs. the Red Sox in Ft. Myers featured the incessant banter between Don Orsillo and color commentator Jerry Remy.

Orsillo, pictured on your left, was so busy being entertained by Remy’s stories from his spring training days as a ballplayer, that when Blanco came to the plate and ran the bases after coming in to take Freddy’s plate in the lineup and at short he continued to refer to him as Galvis.  Yo Don, I know these two guys are  body doubles, but they do have their names printed on the back of their uniforms.

In any event, the Phils – down 7-0 after the 4th – mounted a furious late comeback to lose more respectably 7-6.  Darin Ruf had a rough day, getting plunked in the back with a pitch and then getting tagged while strolling off third based, evidently as distracted as Don Orsillo.  Oh well,  it’s only Spring Training …
