Something odd happened at Bright House Field this afternoon. All of the games here have a start time of 1:05, and today’s game was supposed to be no exception. I have the ticket to prove it.
Yet the Phillies pitchers, from Cole Hamels to Mike Nesseth to Cesar Jimenez were still throwing batting practice to the Orioles for at least an hour after starting time. So in addition to the sweltering sun, it was no fun watching the O’s take an 11-0 lead after the top of the 4th. Why don’t they have a mercy rule in Spring Training? We sure could have used one today!
It was brutally hot in the sun today, much as it was at the stadium yesterday, and Miriam and I agreed that the Phanatic must have air conditioning in his costume. On a day like today there was precious little to attend to on the field, so when the Phanatic spotted a young woman in the stands with his give-a-way glasses on, well ….
So far this Spring my favorite Phanatic interaction is when he spotted the McClure twins, the little boys belong to Phillies pitching coach Bob McClure.
Mac and his family are lovely people, staying in the same place where we are for the month. I hope he has a long successful tenure as Phils’ pitching coach, and that neither today’s performance, nor the uniform I saw sauntering around the walkways was an omen!
