Something Simple to Ponder

Many moons ago, when I was a waiter at the Lake House Hotel doing the obligatory pre-marrying-in-to-the-famiy service, I would offer (what I thought were) interesting observations.  For example, I asked Miriam’s grandmother why it was that virtually all German women’s names ended in a vowel, mostly “e”s with an occasional “a” — Ilse, Gerta, Gertrude, Inge, Claire, Lotte, Trude, Thea … etcetera.  Which only drew this response: “Is that all you have to sink (sp) about”?  I quickly learned to stop making observations, or at least sharing them.  Ah, but in time, Oma and I grew to appreciate one another and developed a close relationship.

Now the tables have turned, and Miriam is the one who makes interesting observations.  Take yesterday, for example.  We were meeting with a planner at the Hyatt for an upcoming event, and as we walked down a hallway this thought came out:  Why is it that rest rooms have the handle vs. push side of the doors backwards?  When you exit the rest room you’ve just washed your hands and you are, at least momentarily hygienic.  That is when you should have a hands-free exit.  Who needs that on the way in?

BR Entrance

BR Exit

Good question, ay?  Sink (sp) about it …
