Did You Know That …. ?

BacallIn the course of looking for something else, I came across an interesting fact about the woman seated at the table above.  She is Lauren Bacall, the sultry 20th century star of films with a distinctive voice and disdain for her large feet (so sayeth Wiki).  What I hadn’t known until reading the Wiki entry was that Lauren was born in the Bronx as Betty Joan Perske, an only daughter to her immigrant Jewish parents Natalie Weinstein-Bacal and William Perske.

Assuming the Wiki entry is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, Ms. Bacall has a well-known first cousin on her father’s side who was born in Poland a year before she was born in the Bronx.  Can you guess who he is?  I’ll give you a clue.  He is a famous Israeli statesman.  Need another clue?  Like his cousin, he also changed his birth name, though not because he needed a stage name. It was common for immigrants to Isarelify their names Hebraically.  This statesman’s name was originally Szymon Perski.  If you haven’t clicked on the link yet, or guessed who it is, drum roll please …

That’s right … Shimon Peres!  With a face almost as iconic as his cousin Lauren Bacall.

  3. Dear Len: You forgot to mention that Lauren Bacal starred in Dark Passage, based on a book by Logan’s own David Goodis.

  4. Thanks for pointing that out, Aaron. Here is David’s webiste, including a picture of him with Bogey & Bacall: http://www.davidgoodis.com/
