Just Say No To Ichiro

IchiroRumors began to swirl yesterday that the Phillies may be interested in acquiring Ichiro Suzuki.  I checked the calendar several times, and April Fool’s Day is still several weeks off so this rumor makes absolutely no sense to me.  Ichiro seems to be a nice fellow and, at the age of 40+ has certainly established some longevity in baseball.  But the last thing in the world the Phillies need right now is to add another past-his-prime-player to the roster.  The Phils’ GM, Ruben Amaro Jr., has a policy of not discussing any rumors, not that it would make any difference.  His explanations after-the-fact don’t seem to shed much light anyway.

The Giants employed a similar strategy with Barry Bonds in the late 2000’s. They kept him around well beyond his prime based solely on his popularity, as a tactic for selling tickets. It would seem ANY team interested in Ichiro at his stage in his career is interested more in his popularity than his skills. Alas, baseball is in the business of making money. As a fan, it becomes frustrating, agreed.
