On a gloomy weather day, with heavy rains, lightning, high winds, and even the remote possibility of a tornado around game time at Bright House this afternoon, the game is sure to be called off. The split squad in Lakeland won’t likely play either.
Orphan Annie and I are pretty confident that the sun will come out tomorrow, and the Phils should be back in business for their game in Sarasota versus the Orioles. But apparently clouds are lingering on the horizon for Cole Hamels.
I don’t like the sound of this. Nor do I understand the Phillies approach. No MRI? Why not? Let’s face it. Here is a guy whose arm had plenty of rest over the winter, and he shows up lame for Spring Training? Then has this setback prior to any game throwing conditions? Hate to sound like Chicken Little here, but I smell the pitching analog of Ryan Howard Syndrome: a fat contract gone south. Nothing personal against Cole. He’s a fine gentleman and deserves all the success he has worked so hard for. It’s just horrible timing again if the club is saddled with a huge contract and a non-functioning star. If this does prove to be the case, the Phils will have to be snake-bit going forward on offering huge, guaranteed contracts.
