Courtesy of Jody & Marvin at Merrill Lynch, my colleague Joe Nap and I toured Yankee Stadium today, with Roy White as an assistant guide. Roy was very gracious in sharing his life’s experiences in baseball. He regaled us with some major league tales, as well as his experiences when he played ball in Japan for three years with the Yomiuri Giants. Charlie Manuel, recently fired manager of the Phillies, played in Japan during the same time period. The switch-hitting White had one incredible game, in which he hit three home runs, including one to tie the game late and a walk-off in extra innings. Despite his extraordinary night, the papers the next morning carried the headline that his legendary Giants teammate, Sadaharu Oh, hit a home run to break the all time HR record in Japan. Here is a clip of Roy’s storied game.
As for the balance of our delightful afternoon, savoring baseball behind the scenes, I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
