Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, also known as Fenway South, is where the Phillies have traveled to play their Spring Training game tonight vs. the Red Sawx. Pretty little stadium, it appears to be, though well outside my self-imposed travel limit to follow the Phils in Florida.
Cole Hamels drew the short straw for the long ride to start the game, and the Phils lineup let the “A” team stay home with a couple of exceptions. Ben Revere led off the game, Pete Orr hit second and played in RF, Jimmy Rollins hit third, and Michael Young was in the cleanup spot. Orr will be in the minors this year, but the other players in the lineup probably will get some playing time: Laynce Nix, JMJ, and Freddy Galvis. Chooch was behind the plate, and got drilled with a pitch while at bat in the top of the 9th – looked like it might have hit him hard in the left wrist area and he went down in a heap. Very little word about this incident so far. Let’s hope he’s not lost for more than the one month drug suspension and can come back in May.
Freddy continues to impress, tonight at 2B, with a slick running catch into short RF toward the line, and a solid triple off Sox starter John Lackey. Would love to see Freddy be a bench guy in Philly instead of being sent to the minors. He’s too valuable in the field – with skills every bit as good already as any of our other starting infielders. And he’s visibly better with the bat than he was last year. Our old buddy Shane Victorino was in RF for the Sox, and had smiles aplenty for his old Phils’ teammates and staff.
And me? I’m just content to watch on MLB.com as the sun goes down over Phillies beach.
