We’ll be heading to the airport in the morning to spend some time in the office, leaving it to the Coopers to keep an eye on things in Clearwater/CB until our return in time for Thursday’s game. We’ll miss our AFL Alumni, Cody Asche, Zach Collier, and Tommy Joseph who were re-assigned to minor league camp this afternoon.
Cody Asche (pronounced “Ashee”) and Tommy Joseph at ages 22 and 21 respectively were impressive, and it would not be surprising to see either of them in Philadelphia for September call-ups. The same will not be said of the third base line Hooters Honorary Ball Girl who like her predecessor interfered by catching a fair ball as it made its way down the left field foul line. We were amused by that, as we were by fans around us thinking that Cody Asche was our son given how exuberant we were in pulling for him to succeed.
If Michael Young has a good season at third, there will be less urgency in Cody coming up. The same might be said of Chooch and how quickly Tommy Joseph might leapfrog Sebastian Valle in the catching depth chart. The Phils put a premium on how catchers handle pitchers, almost treating their bat as a bonus. The inference is that although Valle is a year older than Joseph, Tommy has the inside edge. The Phillies brass couldn’t have been too happy seeing Valle in the middle of the Canada/Mexico WBC Brawl this afternoon.
