Say It Ain’t So, Chooch

Just what the limping Philadelphia sports scene didn’t need.  Carlos “Chooch” Ruiz, the lunch-pail catcher, stalwart of the Philadelphia Phillies lineup, anchor to the pitching staff has tested positive for amphetamines and has been suspended for the first 25 games of the 2013 season.

There are several possible explanations, one of which might play out along the lines of the Zach Collier experience, where he was taking Adderall as an amphetaimine Rx for ADHD and did not obtain clearance from MLB.

The bottom line however is that he is the latest Philadelphia sports figure to let his teammates down, let the fans down, and call into question the off-the-field judgements of role models who play a high stakes game on a very public stage.  The club’s official statement by the GM Ruben Amaro Jr. was that the Phillies support MLB policy, and will support Chooch in an appropriate manner.  So will we as fans.  Not uncritically, but with the recogntion that he is only human, after all.

This is the tip of the iceberg. PED use is still widespread in professional sports; same plot, same theme, different characters.

  2. Bingo; and dare we say it’s not just in professional sports?
