Black Friday. Mob Mentality. Competitive sport of shopping turned into a war zone of sorts replete with tales of survival and post-trauma stress disorder. One hears the same complaints every year – not enough security; bait and switch ads; insufficient stock.
Yet they line up in droves every year, and every year the stores open up earlier, and the lineup begins earlier. Huge savings potentially, but at what cost? I stay away from the whole enterprise, refusing to succumb to the marketing mania either as shopper or spectator. Call me elitist, but giving the inmates a bargain run at the asylum has always struck me as a questionable idea. Nonetheless it has become part of Americana, as traditional as Thanksgiving itself.
