What A Difference A Week Makes

With all the disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy, it’s nice to reflect on the beauty of our visit to the Arizona Fall League last week.  We left our Peoria Javelinas with an 11-4 record sitting comfortably in first place, and now they’ve lost five straight to drop to a half game out of first in the West.  Zach Collier is coming through as my sleeper pick to make it big, and gain an invitation to Spring Training for the Phillies in Clearwater.  We desperately need another good outfielder, and while he hasn’t homered yet, his SLG is over .500 with an OPS over .900 and is very solid defensively at all 3 outfield positions.    (Neither our 3B prospect Asche, or our catching prospect Joseph, are displaying much power, while Babe Ruf continues to smoke the ball in Venezuela.)  Collier’s status is up in the air due to playing time missed, owing to an injry and a drug suspenstion.   But if he continues to produce I agree with the assessment on the Phuture Phillies Blog that he has great potential.  Frankly, I think the Phils’ got seduced by Domonic Brown’s power potential and didn’t notice how deficient he was in fundamentals both offensively and defensively.  Collier appears to have much better instincts, and at 22 has an upside well worth watching.  Would love to see the Phils protect #4 in the Rule 5 draft.
