Will Sandy in AC be NJ’s Katrina?

We decided better safe than sorry today and hung close to our Bergen County apartment rather than ride it out at our shore place.  It has been a protracted calm before the promised storm tonight in the North Jersey/NYC region.  Until now.  Winds are gusting, power is flickering, and we’re sure to be inconvenienced but hopefully safe.  South Jersey is another story, as Sandy appears to be battering Atlantic City mercilessly – prompting one blogger to suggest that she must have lost big at a casino on a prior visit.

NJ Governor Chris Christie delivered a blistering news conference late this afternoon during which he castigated the Mayor of Atlantic City for contravening his order of evacuation.  Evidently the Mayor advised locals that it would be safe to stay in shelters set up around the city.  Heaven forbid that there is a coastal tsunami tonight, and those in the shelters are wiped out.  Should those misfortunate enough to have stayed be of a similar SES to those who perished in Katrina, heads of local officials will be sure to roll.  A roulette gamble gone terribly south.

Thoughtlessness respects no geographic or socioeconomic boundaries, hence this fool who was filmed on his Jet Ski in the Hudson River this afternoon.  As Mayor Bloomberg hinted, perish the thought that a first responder would have to rescue this fellow and suffer harm, or be unavailable to answer a rescue call of someone in need for legitimate reasons.  It seems like everywhere I go, the more I see the less I know …
