Arizona Fall League: Mesa’s Hohokam Park

Mesa, AZ is proud home of Hohokam Park, the site where the Chicago Cubs play in the Cactus league in the spring.  In the fall it’s the home park for the Mesa Solar Sox, whom our Javelinas beat 8-2 today to remain comfortably in first place in the Arizona Fall League.  The announced crowd was 283, but I think they padded the stats.  We overheard the solitary ticket taker working the front entrance admit that it was a slow day.

There were lots of reminders around the Stadium that this was the winter home of the Cubs – very cute ones, I must say.

But back to my favorite subject, the Phils’ prospects on the Peoria Javelinas.  I’m still very high on both Cody Asche and Zach Collier.  Collier has a great eye at the plate, walking a couple of times today, displays some power, and is very fluid in the outfield. Asche is much better defensively at third than advertised, and handles the bat well.  He even knows how to lay down a bunt.  Curiously I haven’t seen Tommy Joseph play yet.  Could be they’re letting him sit due to his offensive struggles.  They are carrying three catchers now, so perhaps we’ll see him in Scottsdale tomorrow.  Until then, enjoy these images from inside the park today.

The Threshers called and want to know why you don’t pay any attention to them.

The kids had a great time at spring training. All of the players were so friendly to the fans. That’s what makes these events special. We even bumped into a few of them at the hotel later that evening and they recognized the kids!
