Bill Giles on The Creation of the Phanatic

Bill Giles, Chairman of the Phillies executive corps, tells the story of how The Phillie Phanatic was born in his book Pouring Six Beers At A Time And Other Stores from a lifetime in Baseball.   But it’s even more delicious to hear him tell the story live, as he did during this weekend’s Phillies Alumni 2012 Luncheon.  You can judge by Tim McCarver’s rapt attention that he hadn’t heard the story before, as was true for the majority of the audience, evidenced by the howls at the end.  Though Bill’s version of what he wound up paying for the rights to the Phanatic is double what he says it is in the book, a little embellishment always helps make a yarn more delightful.  Listen to Bill’s rendition, at the 3:33 mark into the video:
