The name Jai Pausch may not leap out at you, unless you associate it with her late husband, Dr. Randy Pausch, of The Last Lecture fame. Until recently Jai was known for her stoic stance in the face of her husband’s fatal pancreatic cancer. They were the subject of an ABC Special in 2008 narrated by Diane Sawyer.
Millions of people found The Last Lecture inspirational. If you did, Jai’s new book Dream New Dreams will be of interest. Though there are many books that have dealt with the subject of deep and personal loss, of the grieving stages, and of starting over, few spouses have to do this in a public eye as keenly as Jai Pausch. Her book is very well done, and provides insights that go beyond the preview she gave of her feelings in a People Magazine interview in 2009. Three years later, now a board member of cancer networks and foundations, Jai has boldly written about her transition and coping strategies as a caretaker, in what is sure to be a primer enabling others to go on with their lives when darkness threatens to prevail. You can gain a sense of Jai’s determination in this interview.
