Lake of the Lillies (LOL)

Forty-six years ago, George Makin executed a deed in his will that said his majority ownership in Lake of the Lillies (a couple of blocks from our lake) could only be transferred if the purchaser “maintained the lake in a healthy condition for use and enjoyment of the wildlife of the area and the spritual, moral, and psychic enrichment of the people of the community“.  The borough of Point Pleasant Beach purchased 19 acres of the lake, becoming a co-owner with 11 of the neighbors whose houses rim the lake, in 1974.  The ensuing years were not kind to the ecology of the lake, when homeowners felt the town was dragging its feet in dredging the lake to preserve Makin’s intent, they instituted a law suit.  The dredging was completed earlier this year, and Lake of the Lillies and its house-rimming neighbors can now LOL again.  Spiritual, moral, and psychic enrichment is back, along with the swans and fishing co-existing.
