Where Has (God) Bless You Gone?

Morning Starbucks.  Man buries his gaze in the newspaper.  Woman burrows her gaze into her laptop.  I sneeze.  No reaction.  No “God Bless You”, or even the non-theologic “Bless You”.

What’s the origin of the term, anyway?  Snopes has a nice discussion.  We don’t acknowledge a cough, a belch, or the passing of wind (gotta love that whimsical term) with a blessing.  We may never really know the origin, but we’ve always blessed the sneeze.  The chain sneezer can even expect one emphatic “Bless You!”, like the applause held for the fireworks grand finale.  In the final analysis it may simply be a courtesy reflecting acknowledgment of something another does.  And like many other courtesies, it seems to be heading toward extinction. Let’s hope not.
