A helicopter patrolled the skies above Point Pleasant Beach this morning as dawn revealed the riptides pounding the beach. The weather forecasts were ominous last night, prompting us to move most items from the deck under cover or indoors. So far Earl has spared us his fury, but better safe than sorry.
We’re a block from the ocean, but on the beachfront many more ounces of prevention have gone into safeguarding properties closer to the action. Our favorite hangout, Martell’s, has sand-duned and sand-bagged the Tiki Bar area down and up. They will predictably get battered the hardest as Earl churns up the East Coast today.
There is lots of caution here, and it is prudent. The rain has come in spurts, and the beaches are officially closed. There will always be thrill-seekers who easily pass through the barriers intended to discourage them, and who will tempt fate.
